PILGRIM’S KNOB, Va. — Grundy got its share of extra possessions Friday, thanks to Paige Owens.
The sophomore post helped the Lady Wave get by Twin Valley, 43-37, in Black Diamond District play Friday night.
Owens and Morgan Hall each posted double-doubles for Grundy (8-7). Hall, whose free throw with 1:43 remaining snapped a 37-37 tie, had a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds and Owens contributed 10 points and a game-high 19 rebounds.
“The play of Paige Owens was the difference in the game,” Grundy coach Craig Plymal said. “We thought she had the best match-up for us and she did.”
Kara Goodman scored 14 points and Alexis Vance scored all 12 of her points in the first half for Twin Valley, which led 19-17 at the break.
“Our second half rebounding and the defense of Emily Lane on Vance made a difference, and so did Autumn Sperry,” Plymal added. “She got in a good rhythm shooting the ball and helped us on defense.”
Sperry hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points. Lane dished out five assists.
Twin Valley (7-5) was done in by a 2-for-17 shooting effort in the third period.
“We missed our layups, we missed our foul shots,” Twin Valley coach Rick Goodman said. “We got the shots we wanted in the lane, we just couldn’t make them.”
Hannah O’Quinn, whose bucket inside tied the score at 37-37 with 2:21 remaining, hauled in 15 rebounds and blocked and five shots for the Lady Panthers. Vance had five steals.
